If you're planning on towing an RV or trailer, you'll need a vehicle that's up to the task. Depending on the size and weight of your RV or trailer, you may need a heavy-duty truck or SUV. Here's a look at some of the things you'll need to consider when choosing a tow vehicle.

Determine the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The first thing you'll need to do is determine the unloaded vehicle weight rating (UVW) of your RV or trailer. Then you will need to know the GVWR is the maximum weight of the RV or trailer, including all gear and supplies. Once you know both weight ratings, you can start shopping for a tow vehicle.

Consider Your Towing Vehicle

Ideally, you'll want a tow vehicle with a Tow rating that's at least 500 pounds greater than the UVW of the dry weight of a trailer under 5000 pounds or 1,000 pounds greater than the weight of your trailer if it is over 5000 pounds. This will give you a margin of safety in case you need to make an emergency stop or encounter other unexpected situations.

If you're planning on towing a large RV or trailer, you'll likely need a large ½-ton or heavy-duty truck, these vehicles have the power and capacity to handle the weight of a large RV or trailer. The most popular truck brands are Ford, Chevrolet/GMC, and the Dodge Ram.

Things to Know When Choosing a Towing Vehicle

When choosing a tow vehicle, you'll also need to consider the type of transmission it has. Ideally, you'll want a vehicle with an automatic transmission. This type of transmission is easier to use when towing a large RV or trailer.

You'll also need to make sure the tow vehicle has enough hitch capacity to handle the weight of your RV or trailer. Hitch capacity is typically listed in the owner's manual or on a sticker on the hitch of the vehicle.

Don’t Forget the Tires

Be sure to check the tires on your tow vehicle. Towing a heavy RV or trailer can put a lot of stress on the tires. Be sure the tires on your tow vehicle are in good condition and have plenty of tread. You may also want to consider upgrading to heavier-duty tires if you're planning on doing a lot of towing. As well it is always important to inspect the tires on the trailer. Although the tires may have lots of tread, they sit out in the sun, so it is good to inspect the sidewall for any cracks or sun damage.

Best Vehicles for Towing

When it comes to towing, not all vehicles are created equal. Some are better equipped for the task than others, and if you're planning on doing any serious towing, it's important to choose a vehicle that can handle the job. Here are some of the best vehicles for towing, whether you're looking for a car, truck, or SUV.

Cars

Most cars are not equipped to tow. The frames and drivetrain are designed to be light and fuel-efficient which affects how much they can tow. However, there are a few options worth considering. The Audi A6 Allroad and Subaru Outback are both great choices, as they offer plenty of power for towing a small teardrop-style trailer. If you need something more, you will need to upgrade to a minivan or SUV.

Trucks

When it comes to trucks, there are a few different options worth considering. If you're looking for a truck that can do some serious hauling, the Ford F-150 is a great choice. It's the most popular truck on the market and offers plenty of power and space for hauling large loads. If you need something even more powerful, you will need to look at a ¾-ton or 1-ton truck. Those trucks have larger payloads, and they are designed to tow Fifth wheels and Toy Haulers.

SUVs

If you're looking for an SUV that can do some serious towing, there are a few different options worth considering. The Nissan Pathfinder is a great choice, as it offers plenty of power and space for hauling large loads. If you need something even more powerful, the Chevy Tahoe, Nissan Armada, or Ford Expedition are some options worth considering. These Full-size SUVs are built on full frames like trucks that’s why they can handle towing large loads.

Now that you know what to look for in a tow vehicle, you can start shopping for the right one to fit your needs. Be sure to consult with a qualified mechanic or dealership to make sure the vehicle you choose is up to the task of safely towing your RV or trailer.
